While pregnant, every one tells you how important it is to focus on becoming a mother. You learn everything you need to welcome your bundle of joy. What people don’t stress is how important it is to prioritize self-care activities aka hobbies. Our own personal enjoyments and desires can get lost in the obligations of mom life. Can you think of the last time you scheduled time for your hobbies and didn’t reschedule or outright cancel your time for something or someone in your life?

I’ll wait……

It’s been three years since I became a mom and I struggled with having any “me time” let alone a hobby. Unless you call Netflix binge-watching multiple shows waiting for Netflix to ask ” Are you still there” a hobby? The little bit of free time I could score while everyone was sleeping was wasted because I never planned ahead. I’d always say I want to start “insert hobby” but  now is just not the right time. Or, I’d convince myself that I had to wait until things “settle down”. Let me be the first to tell you guys, things never settle down!

When I became a working mom again, I noticed how much I neglected my own personal time to just do things that I enjoy or want to try out. Between work, being a military wife, a mom, a friend, daughter, a sister and more, I was exhausted and running on empty.

1. Gardening

Gardening has taught me patience and consistency. I’ve bought plants at near death and brought them back to life with consistent watering and attention. This has brought me so much joy. Sometimes on days when everything seems to be wrong.

2. Interior Decorating

I’ve always been the type of girl that has liked pretty things. I mean, who doesn’t? But, my house’s presentation has become so much more important since I’ve become a working om. When I walk through the door after a long day of balancing working, a toddler, and a military husband, I want a house that feels like an oasis. Coming up with concepts for each room and spending time searching for gems on a budget has become so satisfying. Now when I go to work, I think about how beautiful my house is and well taken care of my son is.

3. Reading

I’m convinced my brain went into a coma / fell into a deep sleep after having my so. In the past few months, I’ve started to study for my GRE ( entrance exam to grad school). The SIMPLEST formulas and theories are like a different language to me. But, reading has reopened my eyes and motivated and inspired me to go after all that I’ve been thinking about. This motivation has helped ease the stress of being a working mom making it an amazing hobby.

4. Nature & Exercising

Let me be the first one to say that I’m far from skinny. But walking among nature and burning calories have been so satisfying. Each week that I’m exercising among a great view, I’m in awe. This inspires me to burn calories, rid of my mom body and clear my mind.

I sit in a chair all day everyday for work. The back pain has been an absolute pain in my behind. Working out has cleared my mind and kept me in shape enough to shop often. This is the perfect hobby for those wanting to blow off steam, get in shape to feel better, and more.
